omnium cargo bike loaded with groceries

it is not your groceries, it is YOU!

When you talk to motorists, about how easy it is to live without a car, they come up with funny reasons for needing one.

Often, one reason are the groceries they need to get for their loved ones.
Actually thats a very obvious bullshit-reason: you can pack just as much onto a bicycle!

For those who need proof, I wrote down one of our shopping-lists:

  • 0.75l olive oil
  • 0.75l vegatable oil
  • 0.75l Vine
  • 6l Juice
  • 2l Beer
  • 2kg rice
  • 1kg oat
  • 32 coffee-pads
  • 5 tins tomatos
  • 0.4l cream
  • 500gr yoghurt
  • 500gr peanut butter
  • 5l milk
  • 5 big oranges
  • 5 lemons
  • 6 bananas
  • 2 cucumbers
  • 80gr tea
  • 60gr nuts
  • 1kg white sugar
  • 500gr cane sugar
  • 210gr crackers
  • 2pcs leek
  • 100gr salami
  • 100gr ham
  • 150gr cheddar cheese
  • 200gr leicester cheese
  • 215gr Appenzeller cheese
  • 125gr bacon
  • 250gr parmesan
  • 270gr beef
  • 2 avocados
  • 250gr butter
  • 200gr cream cheese
  • 8pkgs vanilla sugar
  • 750gr spinache
  • 4 onions
  • 1 sweet potatoe
  • 1 broccoli
  • 1 coliflower
  • 10 eggs
  • 400gr cocoa-pwder
  • 250gr cornstarch
  • 3 kiwis

makes a weight of over 32kg…. and is is no hassle on the cargobike at all.

in addition, because we do not spend money on a car, we can afford better food as, for example, organic vegetables and fruits for making our own juice.
So you could say, that the amount groceries you’re getting is one reason you have a car, but In fact it is the oposite way around: not having a car gives you more budget for getting more and better groceries 😉

  1. And a perhaps a little shorter list also fits into panniers on a normal bike. No extraordinary cargo bike required.

Another benefit: You do your shopping locally and support your neighbourhood.

    1. I can fit three standard-sized paper grocery bags in my two folding panniers and one front basket. The rack fits a 12-pack of soda perfectly, or you can strap other things to it. And you can bring a backpack if you think you’ll have overflow. On my old bike I had even better panniers that could fit a grocery sack and half gallon of milk on each side, but they didn’t fit on my ebike. Most grocery shopping trips really are doable on a bike.

However, I choose to walk with a folding shopping cart most of the time instead, as I can squeeze in just a little more.

You could also purchase a bike trailer and put that on your regular bike for shopping, if you want.
